How it works

Three steps, and the phone connects on its own

Buying is three steps. Installing takes five minutes, once, and it is done at home before you travel.

  1. Choose the destination and the package

Say where you are going and how many days you stay. That country page shows the packages that fit the trip, with everything in the open before you pay.

  2. Pay and get the code

You pay once, with no contract and no automatic renewal. The eSIM installation code and the invoice reach your inbox.

  3. Install it and travel

Install the eSIM before you board. The package clock only starts when you use data at the destination, not on the day you installed it.

Installation

Three ways to get the eSIM onto the phone

They all end in the same place. Take whichever suits: if the code is on the screen of the very phone you are installing on, the QR is no use — use one of the other two.

Before you start

  • Be on a network that works — home Wi-Fi is fine. Installation needs internet.
  • Install before you travel. It is easier at home than in an airport, and it costs nothing: the clock only starts when you use data at the destination.
  • Check the phone takes eSIM and is not locked to an operator. A locked phone refuses the profile without explaining why.

By QR code

The normal route when the code is on another screen — a laptop, or somebody else’s phone. Open the camera or the system QR reader, point it at the code and follow what the phone offers. No app to install.

By hand, with the activation details

With no second screen, use the written details that travel in the same email: the server address (SM-DP+) and the activation code. The phone settings have an option to type them instead of reading the QR. Copy and paste carefully — one character too many makes activation fail without saying why.

By direct link

When the email is open on the very phone that will carry the eSIM, the installation link opens the settings already filled in. One tap and you confirm.

On iPhone, in five steps

You need internet to install — home Wi-Fi is fine. And the QR code has to be on another screen (a computer, or someone else's phone), because this phone's camera is what reads it.

  1. Open Settings, go to Mobile Data and scroll down to Add eSIM.

  2. Point the camera at the QR code we emailed you.

  3. Choose AfroChip as your data line. Calls stay on your usual line.

  4. Check that mobile data is switched on for the new line.

  5. Turn on data roaming for AfroChip. You are ready to go.

Install before you travel. Installing early costs you nothing: the package clock only starts when you use data at your destination.

On Android, in five steps

You need internet to install — home Wi-Fi is fine. And the QR code has to be on another screen (a computer, or someone else's phone), because this phone's camera is what reads it.

  1. Open Settings, go to Network and Internet, then SIM cards.

  2. Choose Download a SIM instead and scan the QR code from the email.

  3. Choose AfroChip for mobile data. Calls stay on your usual line.

  4. Switch the new profile on and confirm data roaming for it.

  5. Turn roaming off on your usual card. You are ready to go.

Install before you travel. Installing early costs you nothing: the package clock only starts when you use data at your destination.

iPhone

  1. Settings, then Cellular (or Mobile Data).
  2. Add eSIM, then Use QR Code.
  3. Point the camera at the code, or choose Enter Details Manually and type the server and the activation code.
  4. Give the new line a name — "AfroChip" will do — and keep your usual line as the primary one for calls and SMS.

Android

  1. Settings, Network and Internet (the name changes by brand), then SIM or SIM cards.
  2. Add eSIM, or Download a SIM instead.
  3. Scan the QR code, or take the option to type the activation details by hand.
  4. When the profile shows in the list, switch it on and pick it as the mobile data line.

The most expensive mistake

Switch off mobile data on your own line before you land

An installed eSIM does not switch off the line that was already there. If mobile data on your usual SIM stays on abroad, that is the line the phone uses to reach the internet — and that is roaming from your home operator, at their rate, with the eSIM you paid for sitting idle beside it.

  1. In the mobile network settings, select your usual line and switch off mobile data and data roaming on that line.

  2. Leave that line switched on for calls and SMS: that is how your bank codes keep arriving.

  3. Pick the AfroChip eSIM as the mobile data line, and turn off automatic switching between lines if the phone offers it.

When you land

Turn flight mode on and off once. The phone looks for the local network, the eSIM connects, and that moment — the first megabyte spent — is when the package clock starts.

If it does not install

Talk to us before trying ten times. An eSIM profile has a limited number of installs, and burning them blindly turns a small problem into an expensive one. There is a counter in Luanda and somebody can pick up the phone.
